Skin brightening FAQs

ZO® Skin Health skin brightening products are specially formulated to provide multiple benefits for people with various skin types.

  • Reduces complexion discoloration: Sun damage can result in skin discoloration. Skin brightening creams and products target dark spots by hydrating and promoting cell turnover.
  • Brightens skin tone: Effectively addresses a dull complexion, evens skin tone and reduces blemishes.
  • Anti-aging properties: Targets fine lines and wrinkles and improves overall skin texture.
  • Calms + soothes: Provides skin soothing properties that help reduce redness.
  • All skin types: Products can be used by people with a range of skin concerns.

  • Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, this ingredient protects your skin against free radicals, such as pollution, that can damage your complexion. Vitamin C can help reduce the signs of aging and give your skin a boost.
  • Retinol: A skincare favorite derived from vitamin A, this retinoid often features in skin brightening and lightening creams due to its multiple benefits. Retinol promotes clearer pores, cell turnover, and can minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Niacinamide: A water-soluble form of vitamin B3, this supports your skin's barrier function, helping to hydrate and reduce redness. Niacinamide is a gentle ingredient, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Bakuchiol: Derived from the psoralea corylifolia plant, bakuchiol is an effective anti-aging and soothing ingredient that can help reduce redness and boost firmness when used in skin brightening products.
  • Papain: Found in papaya, its enzymatic exfoliation properties help improve skin texture and tone.
  • Tranexamic acid: Safe for all skin types, this gentle ingredient helps to minimize discoloration and promotes a brighter complexion.
  • Beta glucan: Derived from licorice, this helps to calm + soothe skin, reducing redness and hydrating your complexion.

People with all skin types can use products to help brighten their complexion. Even those with sensitive skin can use brightening creams and serums that include gentle ingredients. People with dry skin typically benefit from ingredients that contain hydrating properties.

If you're using retinol-based brightening skincare for the first time, you should introduce it gradually to let your skin adapt and reduce the chances of irritation.

You can easily add complexion brightening products to your regimen:

  • Choose your product: Select from skin brightening and lightening creams, gentle cleansers, exfoliating polishes, and serums with a range of active and effective ingredients that target key concerns such as fine lines, dullness, and redness.
  • Use in the AM or PM: Many products with gentle ingredients can be used in the morning or the evening, for effective results, depending on your preference.
  • Build up retinol use gradually: Use 2 times a week before building up to every day, depending on your tolerance, to avoid irritation. You can also start with a formula with a lower concentration until your skin becomes used to it.
  • Consider other ingredients: You should be mindful of using brightening skincare alongside other products as some ingredients shouldn't be combined.

If you currently have a regimen that includes ingredients such as vitamin C, it's important to be careful when introducing brightening skincare products:

  • Avoid pairing vitamin C and retinol: These two ingredients should not be used together as they feature different pH environments. You won't find skincare products combining both vitamin C and retinol.
  • Use products at different times of day: For the most effective results, you should use vitamin C in the AM and retinol in the PM before bed.

In the past, it was thought that these two ingredients shouldn't be used together as they could irritate. However, if they are stored safely and not at high temperatures, vitamin C and niacinamide are safe to use and can provide a range of benefits.

Start slowly if you're incorporating them into your regimen for the first time. Introduce one product at a time and allow time in between to let your skin become used to the new products.

Remember to store your skincare away from direct sunlight and keep products in their original packaging to ensure the ingredients don't become unstable.
